firmware update-firmware update-etc. etc. ad infinitum. why can’t samsung do the up-grade before sending some less than correct/complete unit out to customers to have to “fix”. I make jewelry for a living, anyone out there want to buy a ring with a missing stone and then have to put it in the ring themselves later?

This DVD player did not work at all. It could not read any disc so i returned it to the manufacturer to be repaired. I learned a lesson–don’t buy Samsung products and don’t buy electronics from Amazon. The Samsung tech support wasted a lot of my time before deciding the player was defective.

This review is not about the product, but about the vendor, Abe’s of Maine. I went to purchase this product from Amazon, but Amazon was out of stock, so I clicked through to Abe’s (an Amazon recommended vendor). Made the purchase. Confirmation. Yadda yadda. A few days later, got a call from Abe’s saying that the product had shipped, trying to up-sell me extended warranty. No thanks. Said that product was shipped, should expect it “on Thursday or Friday”.
Another week passed. No product. Called Abe’s. Product never shipped! Will “probably ship in the next few days”.
Bottom line: avoid Abe’s of Maine. Seems that telling the truth is not part of the package at Abe’s.
Update 1/20/09. Latest ship date came and went. Called Abe’s, put on hold for 15 minutes, after which I got a recording that the store was now closed and to call back during normal business hours. This has now been going on for over a month. Oh, by the way, where to you think “Abe’s of Maine” is located? Brooklyn. “Abe’s of Brooklyn” has a little different ring to it, don’t you think?

This has been said many times before, and I will repeat it — right now, as of January 2009, the best overall blu-ray player for your money is the PS3. Now, with that said, most of our movie watching is via netflix, so this seemed like a player useful to us due to the streaming option. However, what isn’t advertised is the fact that, if you use a wireless network for your internet use, you will need a seperate wireless bridge to be able to use the live function. It didn’t occur to me that this player wouldn’t be capable of that beforehand, because my PS3 has spoiled me into thinking everything can be wireless. Of course, your device needs a cpu to be able to process that connection, and as such, there is not a standalone blu-ray player that is thus far that smart (again, except for the PS3). So, if you want to use this for the netflix function, just know you also need to buy a bridge if you do wireless internet like most of the world. Unless of course you want to run wires from where your internet modem is to the player itself. Personally, I don’t have my computer and modem in the same room where my tv is…
Also, worth mentioning is the fact that the major movie makers have just cracked down on the whole streaming industry, and there are less and less options available to choose from with netflix, with the talk being that future new releases might not even be offered in this format…

I have had this product for two weeks and everything was great playing blue ray disks until I played a regular dvd now it will not play any blue ray disks. I called Samsung and they new way to soon what the problem was, it has two eyes to read disk and once I played a regular dvd it will not switch back to read blue ray. Thay said it was defective and I need to send it for repair. I am sure this is a known issue and they should have recalled this item instead of letting the consumer down.
