There are only 4 possible reasons to buy this system or anything else like it:
1. Absolute aversion to dealing with a bunch of speaker wires.
2. Absolute need to have as few black boxes in your living room as possible.
3. Absolute inability/unwillingness to learn how to use a real home theater receiver.
4. Absolute inability/unwillingness to divorce a spouse with #1, #2, and/or #3.
For eight hundred bucks you can actually get a much better home theater setup that would blow this thing clear out of the water: a Panasonic sa-xr55 digital receiver for around two hundred fifty, a Dayton 12″ subwoofer for around a hundred fifty shipped from partsexpress dot com, and 5 Athena speakers (2 pairs of AS-B1.2s and 1 AS-C1.2) from audioadvisor dot com for three hundred and eighty. And no, you would NOT need a bare/minimalist room to get the full surround effect that this Yamaha soundbar requires (not that it even does get much of a true “surround” effect even under those conditions).
That’s just one of many much better alternatives for the same price range. Ask around on various online audio forums/discussion boards such as AVS Forum, Hometheaterforum dot com, Ecoustics dot com, etc.
Having said that, these Yamaha soundbars are still nowhere as much a flaming rip-off as any of those God-awful Bose systems.

I purchased the Yamaha YSP800 as a last year model on sale for 200.00 at a local electronic store. Holy @#** it rocks. My kids thought an earthquake had derailed a train and it was crashing into the house. I have it matched up with a Sony 200 watt subwoofer and it gives a sweet bone rattling experience. Haven’t tried without the subwoofer don’t see the need to. Incredible sounds that will rip your face right off. I love it would definately recommend.

*Disclaimer-I am not an audiophile, nor do I play one on TV*
I wanted simplicity and quality. I considered a Bose system, but ended up choosing the YSP-800. Wall mounted and paired with the Yamaha YST-FSW100 Advanced YST II Subwoofer ( Silver ) for more low end punch, the system delivers a very nice surround sound “like” environment. Quite impressive at higher volumes, but even MORE impressive when you turn it way down at night, after the kids go to bed, and you can still hear every audio detail. Crisp, clean, flawless audio. I’d buy it again in a heartbeat.

Excellent amplifier / speaker for fairly specific space….ie shelf under or over TV, and being really honest it rarely achieves real surround (other than during set up!). But it has a deep rich sound, much better than the TV speakers (a 36 inch panasonic plasma), so its worth the money to save on wires and speakers everywhere. easy set up and menu and pretty good range of sound effects.
